Asa Hunt Maley

Funeral Services for Asa Hunt Maley, 55, Clinton resident will be held 1:00 Tuesday, October 30, 2012 in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Dale Nease and Rev. Andy Taylor and burial will conclude in the Maley-Murphy family Cemetery at the Valley View Farms and Ranch west of Clinton under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Asa Hunt Maley was born January 25th, 1957 in Viejo, California and raised by parents A.R. and Helen (Hunt) Maley in Sayre, Oklahoma and he passed away from complications related to Hepatitis C, end stages of liver cirrhosis and terminal liver cancer in his rural home in Clinton on October 27, 2012. He was raised in Sayre, Oklahoma where his father A.R. Maley owned the Fox Vliet Drug and later Maley’s Pharmacy and his mother kept the books for the store. He attended Whitehurst Elementary School until he graduated from the 8th grade, at which time he was accepted at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX, (the nation’s only Marine Corps based College Preparatory School). He graduated there in 1975 with a Commandant’s Award for best improved cadet. He returned back to Oklahoma where he farmed and raised white face Hereford cattle with his father, who at this time had retired and sold Maley’s Pharmacy and moved with Helen to her family birthright west of Clinton, known as Valley View Ranch and Farms Hunt attended various colleges and university in Oklahoma, starting with Western Oklahoma State University. He then attended Altus Junior College where he is a member of the founding Altus Junior College Rodeo Team excelling in bareback bronco and finally he attended Oklahoma State University, where his studies were cut short due to the birth of his oldest son Christopher. Hunt’s work ethic was instilled in him from his father and mother at an early age. He sold lemonade from a stand in front of his house when just 6 years old. He often took two or three jobs at one time. Hunt has worked for his family farm west of Clinton, Santa Fe Drilling Company, Parker Drilling Company, Big Chief Drilling and H&P Drilling during Western Oklahoma’s Gas boom o the 70’s. He drove over-the-road for Victory Freightways of Sellersburg, IN, Southwest Motor Freight of Chattanooga, TN, C.R. England and Sons of Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as numerous private trucking firms from California, Washington State and Utah. He entered the building field in the late 80-‘s and built home for other contractors all over the Puget Sound area. He became skilled framer and eventually had his own 8 man framing crew who built over 6,500 square foot homes exclusively. Hunt returned back to the family farm in 1993 after the death of his father so he could take care of his mother and built the business up to include, planting, raising, cutting and bailing of hay, both on his mother’s place and for others. His farming operating also included raising cattle, with over 300 momma cows, at one point, owning his own trucks to haul cattle from south Florida back into the Midwest and hauling hay on the way down. He had owned three stores in Oklahoma that sold Biker Outfitting Clothing and leathers, known as Tophat’s Leather Rack, but had to close the final one to devote full attention to his liver disease. Hunt sat on the board of directors of the Security State Bank in Cheyenne, OK, Foss Lake Association serving as President two terms, Kiwanis Club of Clinton, OK, Camp Commander of the Clinton Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sons of the Revolution, James Towne Society, as well as dozens of other genealogy societies. Hunt got his pilot’s license when he was 16 years of age and often flew with his mother around the country until her death in June 2005. Hunt had left a legacy of children and grandchildren of whom he was most proud: Christopher race Maley, his wife, Katrina (Westreicher) Maley and their children, Tyler Russell, Ethan James, and Grayson Race, Emelia “Emily” Grace Hicks and her husband Bryan Crawford Hicks and their children, Blake Daniel Wohl, Dason Chayaz, Alyxis Breanne, and Audryanna Rayne; he also had three other children by his second marriage, Shyla Amanda Maley, her son, Sidney Hunt “lil Hunt” Jantzen, Asa Luke Maley and his two daughters, Trinity Brielle and Brenna Marie, and his youngest daughter Chelle Bay Maley. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, A.R. and Helen Maley. At the time of his death he was a member of the Sober Psychos Motorcycle Club, having served as secretary in that club for three terms, Through his adult life Hunt struggled under alcohol and drug addiction. He had been clean and sober and living a very rewarding life as patriarch of his family since February 13th, 2007 when he cleaned up for the final time. He spent the rest of his life in service to the still suffering addict and inspired everyone he met with strength, hop and experience for a better life away from drugs. His final legacy was that he was the catalyst for all of his final four children to seek treatment and start living fulfilling lives of their own. Hunt spent most of his time at home during his final years riding Harley Davidson Motorcycles, taking trips to the mountains and Sturgis each year. Other hobbies included boating, fishing, white water rafting, and just being with other clean and sober friends and acquaintances.
