Graveside Service for Gene Schoonmaker, 81, Custer City resident, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the Masonic Cemetery in Custer City, OK officiated by Pastor Jerry Yoder and under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Gene Schoonmaker was born March 9, 1940, to Clifford David Schoonmaker and Blanche Abigail (Miller) Schoonmaker in Clinton, OK and passed away Saturday, December 25, 2021, in his Custer City home. Gene was raised in Custer City and graduated from Custer City High School in 1958. He continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK. He worked for several years at the Custer City CO-OP. He married Doris Jean Raff on January 28, 1960, in Custer City. He began a career with the Frisco Railroad which later became Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1990 he began working with the Federal Railroad Administration where he later retired. During his tenure he was made Assistant Regional Supervisor and received Congressional awards for reports of investigations he had conducted and presented to the Congressional Oversite Committees. He also farmed for several years. He traveled and moved often with his jobs. He lived numerous places including Memphis, TN, Amory, MS, Montgomery, AL, Enid, OK, Wichita, KS, Omaha, NE, Pawnee, OK, Decatur, TX and Custer City, OK. He was a member of the Custer City First Christian Church; he was an avid “FISHERMAN” and “TRAPSHOOTER”, he did both competitively and enjoyed sharing both of these activities with his wife. He also enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family. He always had a pot of coffee ready for visitors and loved visiting with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by daughter, Dawna Mosburg and Steve Carrow, Broken Arrow, OK and Devin Schoonmaker and wife, Micci, Weatherford, OK and sister, Margaret Evans, El Reno, OK and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Suann Raff, Miami, OK. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Holly Morrow and husband Chad, Nick Mosburg, Kelsy Mosburg and Hannah Schoonmaker and three greatgrandchildren, Conlee Morrow, Gracee Morrow and Andee Morrow.
