Erma Coit Smith

Funeral Services for Erma Coit-Smith, 104, Custer County Centurion will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the First Christian Chucrh officiated by Doyle Kinney and burial will follow in the Mound Valley Cemetery in Thomas, OK under the direction of the Kiesau Lee Funeral Home. Erma Ruth (Hook) Coit-Smith was born October 5, 1908 to Carl C. and Cordelia Jane “Jenny” (Farmer) Hook on the family farm near Custer City, Oklahoma and passed away Friday, March 29, 2013 in the Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Oklahoma. Erma was raised in the Independence and Custer City area. She attended Pleasant Valley School which later consolidated with Independence and she graduated in 1925. She continued her education at Southwestern College in Weatherford and an achieved her teachers certificate. She taught school for a short time in a one room school house in central Custer County. She married Lyle Franklin Coit, on June 2, 1926 in Arapaho, OK and they made their home in the Custer City area where they farmers and ranchers their entire married life. Erma and Lyle were named “Oklahoma’s Farm Family of the year in 1961. Erma served several terms as Custer County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee Chairman. Mr. Coit preceded her in death in June of 1976. Mrs. Coit later married Butler resident Lee J. Smith in 1980 and they made their home in Clinton. They enjoyed eight good years together. Mr. Smith preceded her in death in June of 1988 She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Clinton Garden Club; Jolly Workers FCE Club at Independence; she was a Lady Auxiliary Volunteer at the Clinton Regional Hospital for a number of years and volunteered until she was almost 100 years old. She was a long time and faithful member of the First Christian Church where she also served on the mission board and the Chalisto Club. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lyle F. Coit, Jr., Grandsons, Larry Davenport and David Lyle Davenport; a great-granddaughter, Melissa Shepherd, son in law, James Davenport, daughters-in-law, Barbara (Cobb) Coit and Betty (Burtis) Coit. She is survived by a son, Darrell Coit, of Custer City, Daughter, Naomi Davenport, of Denton, TX Step Son, Jimmie Smith and wife, Toni, Cordell Daughters in law, Nancy Coit, OKC, OK and Marilyn Coit, Clinton, OK Grandchildren, James “Jimmy” Davenport, Jr., and wife, Judy Robert Davenport and wife, Cheryl Roger Coit Randy Coit and wife, Kathy Renee’ Beene and husband, Bob Stephen Coit and wife, D’Etta Richard Coit Nancy Shepherd and husband, David
