Florence Mattox

Funeral Services for Florence Mattox, 101, former Putnam resident will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 12, 2017 in the Putnam Christian Church officiated by Rev. David Beck. Burial will follow in the Mound Cemetery in Taloga, OK under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Florence Irene (Gastineau) Owens-Mattox was born March 27, 1916 in Lenora, Oklahoma to Will and Ora (Durham) Gastineau whose parents fled France to escape religious persecution in the 1800's. She passed away October 6, 2017 at Alvin, TX at the age of 101 years six months and nine days. Florence was raised in the Camp Creek Community in Dewey County where her family was instrumental in starting and helping build the Camp Creek Church of the Nazarene. Florence joined the camp church in 1926. In 1929, she was 13 years old, her father died from a tick bite. She was married to Oren Buster Owens and they made their home in Putnam where their four children Billie, Garry, Judy and Larry were born. Due to a fall from a windmill, Buster lost his life in 1970. Florence worked at the Harry Butchers store for 16 years and in 1971 she moved to Huntington Beach, California. She lived a short time with her daughter and son in law, Billie and Bob Byrd. However, she returned back to Western Oklahoma living in Clinton and was employed at the Trade Winds Motel. She soon met McDonald Mattox whom she married in 1975. Florence and Mac traveled around as Mac worked in the oil and gas industry, settling in Alvin, TX to be close to Judy and Larry. Mac preceded her in death in 2001. Florence was a member of the Putnam Methodist Church and she later transferred her membership to Alvin, Texas. While living at Putnam, she enjoyed quilting with Methodist ladies, also gardening and canning; she liked to fish both fresh and salt water. In 2007 Florence moved in with Judy and Alton Robertson, in 2010 Billie also moved in with Judy to help care their mother for the rest of her life. Those preceding her in death, husbands, Buster and Mac, her parents, five brothers, and three sisters and a great grandson, Mitch Credeur and a son in law, Bob Byrd. She is survived by her two daughters, Billie Byrd, Duson, LA, Judy Robertson and husband, Alton, Alvin, TX, sons, Larry of Alvin, TX and Garry and wife, Roberta, Putnam, OK. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, friends and special friends Bennie and Mickey Vanderwork.
