She received her formal education starting at the Excelsior Elementary School and later in the Clinton Public School system, graduating in the class of 1973. She married James Hicks, Jr. and to this union, two wonderful children were born; later the marriage ended. Mrs. Hicks enjoyed the Nursing profession which she viewed as a special ministry, she enjoyed utilizing her skills to provide compassionate care to her patients in different hospitals, but her favorite ministry was working in Nursing Homes until illness forced her into medical retirement. Mrs. Hicks's spiritual life started when she accepted the call to salvation, while attending the Bethany Baptist Church one Sunday morning under the pastoral leadership of Reverend W. B. Mucker of Clinton, Oklahoma. During this time, she committed herself to the church by singing in the youth choir, youth activities, Bible Study, the Western District Association, Oklahoma State Baptist Convention, and other organizations. However she loved attending Emmanuel Tabernacle with her cousins. Mrs. Hicks later became a Missionary and she was one to stay in church all day. She loved going to church listening to the Songs of Zion and hearing good solid preaching from God's Word. Mrs. Hicks loved to spoil her children and grandchildren. She loved her large extended family the Murphys, Harls, Wilsons, Proctors, Hesters, Sami's, Longs, Edmundsons, Shaws, and Hicks. On Saturday afternoon, July 18, 2015 Mrs. Hicks was called to The Kingdom to be with the Lord and to join her parents, an infant brother Robert L. Murphy, and her sweet granddaughter little Christine Hicks and other family members. She was provided constant loving care by her daughter Eldonia as her health rapidly started failing. They were supported by her son, and her brothers. Recently, she shared with her brother, "Everybody should be getting ready to meet the Lord! Everybody needs to hear and accept the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Son of God. I am not afraid to die; because I am ready to meet my Savior Jesus Christ. I know Him for myself.
