Jane Burtis Smith, 89, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 18th. Jane is survived by her husband, Donald J. Smith of North Palm Beach, daughter Stephanie Nelson(Scott) of Tampa, son Brian Smith (Lisa) of Jupter, six grandsons, Ryan Nelson (Ashleigh), Grant Nelson (Desire), Bradley Nelson (Kelsey), Chase Nelson (Erika), Travis Smith, Nathan Smith and one great granddaughter, Magnolia. Jane was born in Clinton , Oklahoma, March 19, 1932 to Buff and Reba Burtis. She grew up there and graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and Oklahoma University, majoring in Speech and English. She loved the college life and her Pi Beta Phi sisters and wanted to become a school teacher upon graduation. Jane married her high school sweetheart, Donald John, who was in Naval Pilot training in Pensacola, Florida, in June, 1954. They lived in Jacksonville, Florida until his release from active duty in 1957 and moved to West Palm Beach where Don started his career with Pratt Whitney. After moving to Lake Park in 1958 Jane started her teaching career at Riviera Beach High School. Jane quickly became involved in community and church activities such as United Way Board, Science Museum, Junior League President, Presbyterian Church choirs, and one of her favorites The PEO Sisterhood where she served as State and International Presidents. Raising her family in North Palm Beach, tennis and bridge with friends and sharing good times with grandsons gave her a wonderful life. Jane will be flown to Oklahoma where there will be a graveside family service in Clinton, Oklahoma on November 30th. A celebration of life service is scheduled at the North Palm Beach First Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 10th at 4:00p.m. Jane will always be remembered for her heart to serve others. She will be forever missed by her many friends and family. In lieu of flowers you may contribute to your favorite charity of your choice or the North Palm Beach First Presbyterian Church
