March 7, 1960 — January 8, 2013

A Celebration of Life Service for Sonya J. Flaming, 52, former Corn resident will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 12, 2013 in the Herold Mennonite Church in Bessie, OK officiated by Rev. Gene Thiezen and burial will conclude the Herold Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Sonya Jean Flaming was born March 7, 1960 to Lavern and Donna (Lohrenz) Nickel in Clinton, OK and passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 in Frisco, TX following a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Sonya was raised in the Corn area and she graduated from Washita Heights School in 1978. She continued her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University receiving her degree in teacher’s education. She was married to Jim Flaming on December 30, 1982 and they made their first home in Weatherford. She has committed most of her adult life to adult education and started her career at Caddo Kiowa Technical School and the Redlands Jr. College in El Reno, OK. Before moving to Van Alstine, TX in 2006 she had completed her Master’s Degree in Education. Her most recent assignment was with the Collin College in Plano, TX. She was preceded in death by her father and a niece, Brewana Nickel. She is a member of the Mennonite Church, she served on the Oklahoma Southwestern State University Alumni Board, and she was a member of numerous professional educational organizations. She was survived by her husband, Jim of the home, her mother, Donna Nickel, Weatherford, two brothers, Jeff Nickel and wife, Lisa, and Tim Nickel and wife, Arleta, all of Weatherford. She is also survived by a niece and nephew, Bethany Nickel-Slagell and husband, Joseph, Hydro and Bryce Nickel, Weatherford. The family has suggested those wishing to give a memorial contribution may do so to the Oklahoma State University Foundation, Sonya Flaming Memorial Fund, 100 Campus Drive, Weatherford, OK 73096
