Una June Widener Stephens was born December 5, 1916 to George T. and Eliza M. (Clark) Widener in Putnam area and passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 in the Grace Living Center in Clinton, OK. June attended school at Burmah and Putnam. She married Loyd E. "Dan" Stephens November 30, 1936 at the Washita County Court House in Cordell, Oklahoma. June and Dan made their home in Putnam for a few years, then moved to their farm south of Putnam. Dan Stephens passed away in 1968, and June continued to make her home on their farm. She enjoyed working in the yard, and called herself a weed cutter; she liked keeping her farm looking neat. Her needs for keeping a neat place were simple: a gallon of gasoline, a quart of oil, and a six pack of Dr. Pepper." In June 1958, June lost her hand in a combine accident. When she came home from being in the hospital in Oklahoma City, she knew nothing could change the fact that she would always have only one hand. She began to learn what she could do and continued to carry on her activelife. June became a traveling lady, making several trips to California, and visited Washington DC and point's in-between. While in Washington, Congress was in session, and Barry Goldwater was speaking. June recorded her travels in a journal: it makes great reading. When the café was open in Putnam, she and her good friend Ethel Graft met with ten or more ladies on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, then toured the countryside. Junealways enjoyed thisvery much. Because of her continual selfless acts of helpings others throughout her life, June was inducted into the Dewey County Hall of Fame in 2000 which she always considered a great honor. June accepted God into her life on March 30, 1998 at her home, and in her words, "I asked God to forgive me for my sins and help guide me the rest of my life into heaven." June was preceded in death by her husband Dan Stephens, her parents, George T. and Eliza Widener; two brothers, Sam and Hugo Widener; a sister Cloye Stubblefield, and two nephews, Bill Widener and Wendell Widener. She is survived by six nephews and nieces, several great nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
