Vera Schimmel

Funeral Services for Vera Schimmel, 89, a resident of Bessie, Oklahoma will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Bessie. Pastor Alan Fox will officiate. Burial will be at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Vera Eloise Schimmel was born August 19, 1926 to Edwin George Horne and Alice (Rutherford) Horne in McLoud, Oklahoma. She passed away September 24, 2015 at the Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. Vera was raised in Oklahoma City, where she attended Taft Junior High School and Classen High School, graduating in 1944. She worked for Braniff Airlines and IBM. She married Gilbert Schimmel on June 7, 1956, and they made their home in Oklahoma City. When Gilbert retired in 1992, the couple moved to Bessie. During her years in Oklahoma City, she was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. After moving to Bessie, she was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed doing needle work and was an avid fan of the University of Oklahoma. She also enjoyed spending winters with Gilbert in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Evelyn England, and a brother Edwin G. Horne Jr. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert, their son, Mark Schimmel, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Ft. Mill, South Carolina. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Clarissa Stockwell and her husband, Kord, of Bethany, Oklahoma; Matthew Schimmel, Kevin Schimmel, and Walter Schimmel and his wife, Kimberly, all of Oklahoma City; and four great grandchildren, Kayli, Mark, Ella, and Templar. A host of nieces and nephews, with whom she remained close, fondly remember her as a loving aunt, gracious hostess, consummate home-maker, and superb cook.
