Virginia Kauley

Funeral Services for Virginia Kauley, 72, former Hammon resident, now of Canon City, Colorado will be held 1:00 P.M., Thursday, May 12, 2016 in the Indian Commuinity Building in Hammon, OK, officiated by Rev. David Flick and Rev. Mona Bearshield. Burial will conclude in the Hammon Indian Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Virginia Kauley was born February 2, 1944 to Arthur and Inez (Elk River) Kauley in Clinton, Oklahoma and passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the Valley View Health Center in Canon City, Colorado. Virginia was raised in Hammon, Oklahoma where she attended Hammon School. She also attended Haskell Indian Institute graduating in 1964. She went on to continue her education as Cameron University in Lawton, OK and received a degree in banking. Her first job was in San Franciso working as a bank teller. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husband's Franky James Shortman and Larry Reidhead and five brothers, Edwin Pewo, Jody Pewo, Kenneth Kauley, Calvin Kauley and David Kauley and Norman three sisters, Mable Stacher, Stella Kauley and Norma Washa. She was a member of the Hammon Indian Baptist Church and the Native American Church. She enjoyed, camping, cooking, fishing and she was an accomplished seamstress and often made clothes for her family. She is survived by 3 daughters; Kimberly Tunnell of Paonia, Colorado; Francine Shortman of Shawnee, Oklahoma; and Vanessa Shortman of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a sister Lillie Kauley of Hammon, Oklahoma. 14 Grandchildren and 1 Great-Grandchild and a host of family friends.
